Hey fellas,
I've gotten a couple of PM's recently about reading college essays, and I enjoy reading them, so I figured I'll make a thread about it. I'll be happy to read and review your essay for you. Here's what I do:
1. I read the essay for grammatical errors, and I point those out for you.
2. I write a short paragraph that describes my impression of the applicant [you].
3. I do NOT offer stylistic changes or topic suggestions or "is this topic good" or anything like that. I will tell you if I think your topic is overused, but that's it.
I think the most important factor in an essay is not what you write but how the adcom views you as a result of the essay. I only offer limited changes because it's important to preserve the reader's voice, and I just want to give feedback/review instead of actually helping you write it.
I've written dozens of college essays [literally], and I have a pretty good idea of a good essay. That being said, I'm not a professional, and I can't give you chances or anything like that - all I can say is what I think of you based on the essay.
I'll read every essay for any part of any college application. No complaints from me, but no demands from you. If you think I was helpful, be sure to post here so that others can send me their stuff too.
That being said, fire away!
Update: It's been nearly 4 years since I started. I only read essays for a few months my freshman year, but I enjoyed it a lot, so I'm starting up the essay review again. PM away!
