Georgia Girl Pondering a Life in the Big Apple

I am a high school student in Georgia, and it will be time to start filling out college applications soon. I have researched college rankings for the major I am sure I'll be pursuing, and all the top colleges are around 10 to 15 hours from home. Also, it seems like my long-term dream job and possible internships as a magazine editor/journalist is only in demand in every big city except Atlanta, which is where I'm closest to. My mom is supportive of my wanting to go to the best college for me and "follow my dreams," but my dad doesn't want me 15 hours away in New York City (and he'd just about die if I moved 34 hours to Cali). In fact, he never fails to hint at his dreams of me going to med school in Atlanta, which is very, very far from my mind. I am sure I can get a decent OOS scholarship, but there are also living (food, clothes, etc.) and transportation costs. There's a lot to consider, and I need advice. Note: I've never visited anywhere outside the south, so moving up north is awfully scary. HELP ME PLEASE
