Intervene with freshman son or leave him be? Alarming discovery

My oldest is a freshman at my alma mater. He’s been there a week and I don’t think he’s made friends or is putting himself out there. I can see on his social media that he’s added no new followers. He is tweeting at or with mostly high school students from home, and I detect some sarcastic animosity towards his peers there. He was the highest achieving of his circle of friends, with his closest friends going to the local junior college. I encouraged him to explore during "shopping period" and he claimed he did, but I detected he was lying to me. I have access to his enrollment and see that he has dropped down to literally the easiest possible schedule you could have, while remaining full time. I'm not being hard here, it's what anyone would call a "cake" schedule. I don’t want to be over involved or sound like a crazy lady holding his hand through this. He was ecstatic to attend my alma mater and some of his recent tweets are a little "braggy," so it's not as if I forced him to go there. I'm struggling to remain hands off. Please advise.
