I posted awhile back about DS17, looking for affordable colleges.
Currently unweighted GPA: 96.74, class rank: 3/415.
Weighted GPA: 99.26, class rank: 5/415.
About 5 AP's, rest of classes were honors.
EC: tech club, spanish club, chess club (disbanded), community service club. Plans on doing Scholastic Bowl this year.
SAT: 1920, 1310 for CR+M
ACT: still waiting on that (hoping for at least a 30)
Guidance counselor wants him to come up with a list of 6-8 schools:
Cornell
Penn
University of Alabama (30 ACT)
Temple (needs 32 on ACT)
Penn State- Main Campus only
Wilkes University
Shippensburg
He toured Cornell & Penn with the gifted program, and liked both of them. U of AL looks really good from their website, though he didn't want to travel that far-- 14 hour drive.
Temple, big school but BIL lives and works there during the week, so could bring him home of weekends if he wanted to do so.
Wilkes University: he could live w/ family and commute. With need based aid and merit, it brings COA down to $3K. It also just got money from PA to improve it's engineering dept. So far it is looking even better than Cornell or Penn, BUT he wouldn't be living on campus, which isn't the greatest.
I can not think of any place else that is even remotely afforadable. I have done the NPC for many schools and they all come out to around $18k - $24K.
Some of the other schools that meet full need have very low percentages of Pell Students. So don't think they are enrolling that many low income students despite some of their claims.
Any opinions?
