Hey, so I was recently accepted to Yale's Class of 2018, and it seems like I might actually go there. However, I've heard that New Haven is notorious for having a lot of violent crime (e.g. rape, muggings, etc) and I was wondering what some current or past Yalies' opinions on crime in and around Yale might be. I come from a fairly - scratch that, REALLY- sheltered suburb, and I've never so much as seen a someone punch another person in public. So I'm kind of concerned that I might not be able to handle living all the way across the country alone, in New Haven no less.
By the way, from what I've gathered, New Haven seems to be getting better about violent crime. But I watched these videos on YouTube (I know, don't trust everything you see on the internet) that kind of freaked me out:
Fight in downtown New Haven (HD) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMe5q_fjU9k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoLKt_Rw2II
the most disturbing thing about this video is that the spectators are LAUGHING. like it's FUNNY to watch two girls brutalize each other.
and this catfight vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXvsE-H3xt8
(Btw, i found many more videos of people egging on two females to fight each other. Is this like a "thing" in New Haven? Or in the East coast in general? Sorry for being so ignorant haha. It's just that I've NEVER seen anything like that before.)
Now, I'm not a hardcore feminist or anything, but this seems incredibly dehumanizing to the girls in the fight. Like what even is the PURPOSE of those fights? To turn the guys on or something? Seriously? Wow... that's just sad.
*edit: I found a video of two GUYS fighting each other (wow, rare considering the majority of new haven fight videos are catfights). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW6bB84hs78
Anyways, sorry for ranting again. Hope some Yalies or current New Haven residents can help share their views on the issue!
