Hey CC, Just found out today I was nominate to engineering and a good friend of mine to science. I have noticed that the science kids are much more connected than we are. Let's make an effort to connect with each other in spite of the asocial tendencies of engineers. Nominees unite (?) Can any past gov. school engineers on CC impart some knowledge on the application process?

I do not want to play baseball in high school, only because it will take up time I need to keep my grades up. I play above high school level during the summer, and am thinking about going to showcases and college camps? Any replies will help. Class of 2017

Miscellaneous Ramblings...

A few thoughts that didn't seem to fit on any thread (including my own "One Family's Story" thread)... - A recent reminder of the uneven playing field BS AOs need to be mindful of. The other day, I was walking through the Princeton U. squash gallery and overheard a conversation by two kids on a court. A girl, who appeared to be in her middle school years, replied to some question from a fellow player with the following, more or less verbatim, “Oh, Wednesday mornings are no good for me, I have chamber ensemble before school.” My first thought about this overheard exchange was this “Wow, that is some esoteric stuff this kid is into at such a young age.” When I was in 8th grade, I was playing scholastic league soccer (badly), had already given up playing the saxophone, and had the following before-school commitments: Eat Breakfast. Goes to show what a difference geography/socioeconomic status can make. And how Boarding School (as well as college) Admissions people really need to take this into account if the process is going to be anything close to equitable. - What not to wear, BS edition I was sitting in the admission area of a BS mentioned occasionally (and not often enough, IMO!) on this forum. No, it was not SAS. And while the majority of applicants appeared to be wearing what I (and most people, I think) would consider to be appropriate outfits; one young woman was wearing an ensemble that both my wife and daughter felt compelled to mention on the ride home. Yoga pants, a tank top, one of those very open-knit slouchy sweaters, worn off the shoulder, and Uggs. I don’t care if you play squash and play cello like Jacqueline du Pr

So Many Rejections This Year--What Has Changed?

$

As many CC frequenters may know, this week has been (and will continue to be) THE week for many of the world's top prospective students. As so many of us hear back from top colleges and universities, it seems that more students than ever are receiving rejection letters. What has changed? In the past I visited CC as a freshmen and sophomore to see what kind of students were being accepted at what kinds of universities. This year, CC seems to be flooded with way more rejected students than in the past. I personally have been rejected from 5 schools and am only awaiting a decision from USC. I'm curious to hear what other CC posters believe to be different about this year than years past. Previously, it seemed like 25-50% of CC members were accepted to Ivies or similarly prestigious schools. This year I've had trouble finding ANYONE accepted to HYPSM and even Duke for that matter. I'm also seeing that many schools RD acceptance rate is below 5%. So, what do you think is different this year. Is it the number of applicants? Strength of the applicant pool? International applicants? Or is this a normal year and I'm just biased because I'm part of the class of 2018?

Do sophmore year act scores count?

I'm taking the ACT during the summer before my junior year for dual credit eligibility in Calc BC...so i'm wondering if these score I get can be used for college admission? Are only junior and senior year act scores applicable? (Don't worry, my school pays for all the juniors to take the ACT in the spring every year, so I will be taking it again anyways).

Financial Aid Appeal Help

Hello! I am in a tough situation. Wellesley is my dream school, and my financial aid package was better than what I received from some schools, but I am still left with about at 25k gap to account for after what my family thinks they can contribute. I want to appeal my package, but I don't know what will be the most helpful to say. I received a full tuition scholarship to Mt. Holyoke, a STRIDE scholarship at Smith, and Oberlin believed my EFC would be about half of what Wellesley thought it should be. Are these good bargaining chips? Some more than others? My parents are also divorced, and I live with my mother. My father and stepmother make significantly more than my mother does. Would they consider putting more weight on my custodial parent's income? Or maybe ignoring my stepmother's? I can't claim that anything major has changed since we filed taxes, which I know is usually the most helpful when appealing. Does anyone have success stories in dealing with Wellesley SFS? I could send in my housing deposit in a heartbeat if they could offer more in aid. Thank you!

Best Hotel to stay in near Tufts?

Hi Experienced Jumbos! DS3 was just accepted to Tufts and we (and he) are so so excited! DS2 is at Harvard, so we are very familiar with staying in Harvard Square, but was wondering if there might be a hotel a little closer to Tufts for the April Admitted Students visit. I'd like DS3 to get a feel for the Tufts area. Will stay in Harvard Square if that is best option, but just wanted to check and see if anyone has any advice. Thanks!

I just checked ISIS and im pretty surprised. The "predicted" loans listed are around $17,000 and bright futures is around $3,000. So UF isnt giving me an grants or scholarships? maybe im not reading it right? This is weird especially considering my EFC is only $7,700 and my sis who goes to UF only has to take out around $9,000 in loans a year. At this point, NYU would be cheaper...

UPitt vs Penn State

I got accepted to both and received the financial aid pkgs. The net price are both the same. However, for pittsburgh..it included work study and a Perkins loan while Penn state offered me a really good provost award. I have been told that Pittsburgh sends out its awards and scholarships after financial aid? The big difference is that I have to take out more loans for pittsburgh and work study is not always guaranteed. Both are exceptional schools and I love both of them. I like pitt due its area but penn b/c of the college experience. I prefer urban over experience. My goal is to go in the health field and pitt is good for it. However, I'm not a 100% sure and I'm afraid i might switch majors if i cant handle it. My entire family and coworkes think its a mistake to pass up psu. what should i do?

Declaring a New Major

My dd attends Towson and did not get into their upper level nursing program. She is considering her options and one of them is to change her major, graduate and then go to an accelerated nursing program. What would be the best major for her to change to or doesn't it make a difference as long as she has all of the prerequisites for the accelerated programs? Big mistake on our part in not having her go to a direct admit school. Ugh! Karen

How bad will one C look on my high school transcript?

I'm a junior, and there's a chance I might get a C for my second semester of AP Calculus AB. I have an otherwise good GPA - all high school, I've gotten a total of three B's and everything else has been an A. I have good extracurriculars and awards/achievements and I think in terms of recommendations, essays, etc., the rest of my application will be strong. If I end up with one C in calc my junior year, will this severely hurt my chances of getting into a school like UVA or University of Michigan?
