Parents anxiously awaiting finaid offers?

I find it amusing (if unsurprising) that the students were all concerned about getting admitted Thursday evening, while as a parent, I am on tenterhooks waiting to see if my part of the tuition will be manageable. Anyone else? And has anyone received their big fat envelope yet? Our AO said they could be arriving as early as today.

I am choosing between Villanova, Boston University, Northeastern, Emory, and Fordham and each of these schools I will most likely be assuming between 40-60k in debt by the time i graduate. My question is what is a manageable amount of debt for a degree in business (most likely finance)? I have the option of a financial safety in Macaulay Honors - Baruch but I prefer to have a traditional university experience if possible.

Can I get into a good college by just being myself?

Hello everyone. I am currently a freshman in high school and I always see people on here with so many extracurriculars and I'm wondering if I have to become one of those people to get into the college I want. I am aiming for one of the better UCs because I would get free tuition there. But I'm am very unsocial because of something I have called selective mutism, which is a type of social anxiety. So I'm not planning on joining any clubs. It would also be hard for me to volunteer anywhere. But it's easy for me to get good grades and test scores, and I guess my essay writing is pretty good too depending on what I'm writing about. So, is this enough? Or must I transform into another one of those college-bots and get the perfect extracurriculars and leadership positions?

Butterfly Effect of bad weather on Revisit Days?

Today is on of the Revisit Days at a number of NE boarding schools. Mother Nature is having a bit of a giggle because light ice pellets are currently falling in parts of Connecticut and rain is highly likely near Boston. I wonder how the vile weather will impact ultimate acceptance decisions. Thoughts?

Can you get into a school for your music and switch majors once you get in?

Hi, I go to a school with one of the best jazz bands in the country(we consistently get first in national competitions) and I've been noticing a bunch of seniors get into great schools with really low gpa's. One person got into USC and one to UCLA both with 3.2 gpa's. One of those people said that he planned on switching majors once he got to the school. Now I am not as good as these players but I would be willing to invest a lot more time into my instrument(drums) if this was a possibility to get me into some high reach schools. So, is this possible? Are their any problems with this that I'm not seeing? Thanks! Also, the one problem I can see would be that switching majors could be tricky, so would you be able to apply as a double major and just discontinue one of them?

Hi I'm planning on being pre-med and am majoring in chemistry. I have been accepted to UCLA and UC Berkeley, but was wait listed at UNC. I really love UNC, but which is the best for pre-med and getting to medical school? On a different note, what are the pros and cons of each? Thanks for your help!

Dartmouth Student Raped. What's the inside situation?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/02/27/rape-guide-dartmouth_n_4869092.html So I got this article on my news alert today about a girl being raped at Dartmouth after some post on Rape Guide thing. Dartmouth is also said to be one of the 41 colleges being investigated under some title ix. I'm a dude, so this isn't technically regarding me but what about the women at Dartmouth. This for the sake of discussion of a rising problem in US colleges. Are women at Dartmouth safe enough? How's the college handling this situation? If you are a girl attending Dartmouth or parent whose daughter is attending Dartmouth, how do you feel about this? What's the inside feed from Dartmouth?

NYU or Cornell conditional/guanteed transfer?

I've been accepted to NYU and UF, and given a transfer option for Cornell sophomore year and I am absolutely torn on what to do. I'll be majoring in Nutritional Science/Global Health no matter which soon I'm at, if that makes a difference or if anyone knows which of them have a better program for that? I could: -Go to NYU all four years: I love NYU from what I've seen, and the Track/XC coach wants me to run there. Running is really important to me and this is the only school I'd be able to do that at. I'm slightly worried about all the loans I'd have to take out here but my parents keep telling me it's no issue. -Go to UF one year and transfer to Cornell: There is nothing very appealing about UF to me except that it might be less expensive and I would get to stay in Florida a little longer with my family and boyfriend. But I also really love Cornell and I don't want to regret giving it up. BUT if something somehow went wrong with my courses and I was unable to transfer to Cornell, I would be stuck at a school I don't like. -Go to NYU one year and transfer to Cornell: In theory this seemed like the best, because I could experience NYU and if I fall in love with it stay, or transfer to Cornell if I think it would be better for me. But I'm worried I'll get too attached, involved in sports, and end up not want to leave. I'm also worried if I do the GT to Cornell, I'll be missing out in a way on a whole year of college. But UGH I love Cornell so much. And I love NYU so much. Can anyone please give me advice? Or their experience with NYU/Cornell GT/UF?

Kelley Standard Admission

Hi, I'm freaking out because Kelley applications are due in a few days and I don't really know what to do if I don't get in. Based on my grades, do I have any chance of being admitted? I pretty much have all of my I-core pre-reqs completed also, so if I don't get admitted it's like I wasted 2 years. Here are the courses I took and the grade I received. Waitlisted

I got waitlisted at Cornell and I want to appeal this, and get into the accepted pool. I'm very passionate about Cornell (since I was rejected from my first choice, Duke) and I hear that the university doesn't ignore appeals without some sort of review. Any ideas on how to approach this? I know for a fact that I'm not under qualified. Here's my info: I'm Asian, my GPA is 3.65 Unweighted (with upward trend, and senior year is my best year so far) SAT: 2270 superscored SAT2: Biology 760, Chinese 780 10 APs taken (planning to finish 16): Statistics 4, Physics B 4, European History 3, Chinese 5, Physics C - Mechanics 5, Physics C - E&M 5, English Lang/Composition 5, Biology 4, US History 4, Calculus BC 5 (AB Subscore 5) Awarded National AP Scholar in Junior year, AP Scholar With Distinction same year AMC School Winner (American Mathematics Competition) AIME Qualifier (scored 4) Foreign Language Essay Contest Winner Extracurriculars: Captain of Varsity Swimming Team, about 4 years worth of Boy Scouts (never got to Eagle), Youth Group volunteering, and Swimming Instructor (paid work). All of which took relatively large time commitments. From what I heard, my essays are strong, and I have a recommendation letter from a Physics Professor at Columbia.

Do you know any prestigious physics summer camps, which are often recommended by top colleges? Because I'm not interested in math but only physics, famous math camps such as Promys and Canada/USA Math Camp don't attract my interest in them.

Community Service Scholarship

Hi! I applied for the Community Service Scholarship, and I haven't received a decision whether or not I got the scholarship. It said on the application that winners would be notified by April 1st--so are only winners notified? Only 30 scholarships are handed out, so I never expected to win, I would just like to know a decision either way! If all applicants are notified, is this by email or by mail? Has anyone received this scholarship?

Please Help! Physics and Computer Science; U of I, Northwestern, Notre Dame, or Carnegie Mellon??

Hello everyone! Could you help me decide about a university? I am planning on double majoring in physics and computer science. I like the feel of a small campus, but I wouldn't be opposed to a larger one in favor of more opportunities. I do enjoy the sports scene and hope to participate in intramurals. It is crucial that I have good undergraduate research opportunities as well. I hope to pursue a Ph.D. in physics with a concentration in astrophysics. I have done my research about the schools, but I still want to obtain as much information as I can to make the best possible decision. I feel fortunate that I have this opportunity, and I want to make the most of it! My three main schools that I have been accepted to and am considering are: University of Illinois Urbana - LAS, full tuition, campus honors program, James Scholar, etc. University of Notre Dame - waiting on financial aid (but in invited to Reilly Program (top 1%) so fingers crossed for possible scholarships!) and other notifications Northwestern - Weinberg, national merit scholarship and waiting on financial aid and other notifications Not to be presumptuous, but decisions come out for Carnegie Mellon shortly and I feel fairly confident about acceptance there (36 ACT, valedictorian, a few state medals in various things, research that used equipment developed at CMU, lots of service, etc.) Hopefully, I will be considering there too in the next few days! So if anyone could offer input on U of I, Northwestern, Notre Dame, or Carnegie Mellon, it would be much appreciated! I'm particularly interested in knowing about their physics programs and their preparation for graduate school. Thanks very much everyone!

UVA over Two Ivies?

My heart is in Charlottesville, but should I really pass up the opportunity to go to an Ivy? I was accepted to both Brown and UPenn, and part of me wishes I had been rejected from them today so that I don't have to make this decision. I'm from a small town in Virginia (pop. 1300), and I don't know if I could ever fit in at an Ivy. I don't know really know what I want to major in, so I can't use that to help me decide. I hate to be that person complaining about being accepted to three amazing schools, but I really can't decide what to do.

Am I a univ or college person?

Hello guys! I've been trying to find out for some time whether I am a university or a LAC guy. I usually love the environment of big schools in big cities, mostly because of the diversity of it. Still, I prefer small classes and knowing the teachers personally. I would like to major in CS, but I have plenty of other interests which I would like to study at university: business, design, cognitive science, philosophy. I also consider myself an entrepreneur, for what I would be happy if there were some kind of startup incubator inside the university, what usually is only seen at huge universities. I am very artistic and creative and would enjoy a campus where diversity is prominent. What do you think? Thank you!
