Parents of the HS class of 2014 - 3.0 to 3.3 GPA

Hi. Excuse my error. I mistakenly posted this in Parents Cafe. Meant to post in Parents Forum. New to CC--sorry. I found the 3.0 to 3.3 GPA Parents HS class of 2013 to be really helpful, but because my D is not graduating until next year, I thought it might be fun to have a thread for HS junior parents. I'm a new member to CC, and have found the info on many of the threads to be helpful and enlightening, but also a bit non-relevant for my D who is NOT an over-achieving top 10% kid. Her GPA is higher than this thread (3.6UW), but she's not in the same level of rigorous classes many CC kids are in. D's in Algebra 2 and takes one AP + one honors class per semester. Needless to say, ivies and elite colleges are not on our radar. Her SAT/ACT test scores are in the 60% range and hoping to go up with retesting in June. I'm looking to connect with parents with great kids who are looking at a different "level" of school. If this is something that interests you, join me as we take an interesting journey over the next year +. Thanks! momofwon is online now

Financial Aid Questions~a journey through the quest of finaid

Hello, I plan to update this thread periodically with questions I have. Thank you so much for reading! Right now I have a few... I plan to pay my own way through college. I could stay home for college and have it mostly paid for with little deficit, which I could probably work off on a side job. However, personal reasons require me to go out of state in Florida (near Miami area). I'm working on getting all the scholarships I can--and I definitely have good financial aid help. I have a 32 act so I think I'm a good candidate for some school scholarships. I'm thinking that I will have my tuition covered with that and finaid combined, and $1,000 toward my dorm costs, but I still am going to have to pay for the rest of room, board, books, and any other cost of living. I'm at zilch right now working on getting a job ASAP over the summer before moving to Florida. (Yes I'm out of state) -Do most colleges allow you to use scholarship/finaid money towards the room deposit when the time comes to pay for that? Or must that come out of pocket? -Can I get the Stafford Loan without parental assistance? I would be considered a dependent student for now This is all I can think of so far. I'm so thankful for the CC website! It's such a help to be with people who are going through the same thing If you have any suggestions for people paying college on their own, I'd love to hear it. Also, do you think this is doable? Or am I crazy for trying to do this unless I get better aid/scholarships? ^_^ Thanks guys

Confused about P/NP Units

Hello, I've recently decided on attending UC Berkeley for the fall. So I've been looking around the Berkeley website for classes I'd like to take, clubs I'd like to join, etc. There's this one club I'm very interested in joining, but I don't really want to say in case it gives my identity away. The club is run as a class, and says that "Units: 3 P/NP". What exactly does this mean? Does it count towards my 20.5 unit ceiling? If so, would you recommend taking such a class freshman year?

Help me decide on a school!

Ok so I'm a PA native and I have applied to twelve schools, but I am still unsure about where I want to go. It would be helpful if some of you could comment about these schools, and share any personal experiences you have had with them. I'm going to study mechanical engineering, so it would be great to hear some feedback about the programs and reputations. After I graduate I'm interested in trying to break into the automotive industry in some way, and I am willing to go back to school. I am a very active outdoor oriented person and I happen to prefer warm weather so take that into consideration. So far I have been admitted to: University of Delaware (Honors)- 9k scholarship per year University of Pittsburgh University of Vermont (Honors)- 12k scholarship per year Penn State (University Park) Clemson University- 10k scholarship per year Case Western Reserve University- 22k scholarship per year University of Miami- (Scholarships have not been released yet) I have yet to hear from: Lehigh University Rice University University of California Santa Barbara Cal Poly SLO Northeastern University

Admitted to MCS for Physics - Now Can I Double Major in CS too?

Hi everyone! I applied to Carnegie Mellon and was admitted to MCS for physics. However, I am still slightly confused on how degrees are pursued across colleges. Can I easily pursue a dual degree in computer science in SCS as well? Or must I fill out an application for SCS? I was invited to the Science and Humanities Scholars Program if that makes any difference. Also, do you think the double major is worth it? I do have interests in both physics and computer science, and I believe it would better prepare me for graduate school and computational physics applications. Thanks for any input!

Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Over at the Parents of the Class of 2013 thread many of us were lamenting our struggles with weight, exercise and health. Since we seem to be a great many in number and we all want and need support and encouragement, let's use this thread to motivate each other towards our goals for 2010 and beyond. I have struggled with my weight my entire life and struggle to balance weight, exercise and work. I am now an empty-nester and will hopefully have more time to focus on the diet and exercise. My 25th college reunion will be in June and I want to be in shape to run the 5k! I need to lose about 45 pounds as well. How about the rest of you? What are your goals for 2010?

Congratulations to all parents of recent middle school graduates! In a couple months, our youngsters will be starting their four year high school jouney. Let's share our thoughts and provide support to each other on this thread as we march through another leg of their education. Here we go. S3 will be a freshman at our local public high school this fall. Born in late October, he is a bit young for his class, and a bit immature compared to his older brothers as they entered high school. I know a lot can and will change between now and 2014, but I'm still concerned about high school adjustment for him. Does anyone else have this concern? Just a couple weeks ago, he got intersted in wood carving. After a couple visits to our local wood carving store, he is now spending hours everyday practicing. We'll see if he is old enough to attend "Carving 101" this summer.

UConn Admissions Decisions

Although UConn Admissions has stated that their decisions are released March 1, does anyone know if they have been released earlier in previous years?

How do you decide?

Ok, I do not want to come off as rude because I know that there are people here who had a rough go of it come March 10th. My DS did not apply to any of the big name, "prestigious" schools often mentioned here. We want a more balanced life for him-academic, athletic, and artistic. So he applied to a bunch of the "hidden gems." He was fortunate to get in 5 of the 6 schools he applied to. He has narrowed his choice down to 3 schools. We have done one revisit thus far and have 2 more over the next week. So for those parents and students who have been through this before....how do you make your final decision if all else ends up being equal? Do you go by what your gut is telling you is the better fit even if you can't fully articulate it? I think I'm more nervous than my DS about the decision!
