Hello. I am new to the whole College Confidential Experience. I am a Junior in High School. I have a 4.7 weighted GPA. Out of state. I really like UCLA, and it is my top school.... Can someone please enlighten me on the probability of me getting in? I want to go into Dentistry eventually, but I want to maybe major in Journalism, and take the prerequisites for the DAT. I really need help. Thank you.

Rice Class of 2018 (HS Class of 2014) ED/RD Thread
I'm kindof surprised that Rice doesn't already have a thread like this. I was thinking this could be a place for all this year's applicants to discuss the application process and post results when the time comes.

UPitt Honors or Boston University? (pre med)
Focusing on academics here, should I go to University of Pittsburgh Honors College or Boston University for pre med?
I want to have a high GPA for medical school. I hear Boston is rumored to have horrible grade deflation, meaning it will be difficult to earn a high GPA. Is it true that med schools weigh an applicant's GPA based on the school they graduated from? For example, if a Boston U graduate and a graduate from a much less prestigious school (e.g. Temple University, Drexel University) have the same GPA, will the BU graduate's GPA be weighted more?
In addition, will earning the same GPA at Pitt Honors or BU be around the same difficulty? Or will it be harder at BU? Apparently BU's pre med intro courses are purposely hard to weed out students.
Also, which school will better prepare me for med school (i.e. MCAT prep, volunteer opportunities, research opportunities, etc.)?
If anyone goes to or went to University of Pittsburgh or Boston Unversity, please help me on my decision!

Fall 2014 Applicants Unite!
This is for everyone that applied/is applying for the Fall 2014 semester at FIT. Naturally, I thought this would be a great idea for us to congregate and encourage one another through the dreadfully slow waiting game.
Well about me:
I'm 25, male, first year FMM applicant (though I'm considered a transfer because of college and ap classes). I completed my application sometime during the first week of october and I attended the open house.

UVA over Two Ivies?
My heart is in Charlottesville, but should I really pass up the opportunity to go to an Ivy? I was accepted to both Brown and UPenn, and part of me wishes I had been rejected from them today so that I don't have to make this decision.
I'm from a small town in Virginia (pop. 1300), and I don't know if I could ever fit in at an Ivy. I don't know really know what I want to major in, so I can't use that to help me decide. I hate to be that person complaining about being accepted to three amazing schools, but I really can't decide what to do.

Finishing a basement
We are getting ready to be the contractors of our basement remodel. We have lots of "toys" - a pool table, ping pong, air hockey, we have a small gym with a treadmill, elliptical and weights, and we want to have a hang out area with a comfy couch, tv & fireplace. We're going to add a full bath down there, we chose ceramic floor tiles that look like wood, and we're putting in a gas fireplace. It's a walkout, but that sliding door is the only above ground area in the basement, so there is not a much natural light.
Any things you did you loved, or wish you did or would recommend now before we start?

Parents of the HS Class of 2018
Hopefully it's not too early to start this thread. In reading the forums here, I've discovered (in some cases) it's never too early to start college planning and questioning!
My 8th grade son is our resident Trekkie and techie. His dream school is MIT, and he is undaunted by the narrow chances of admittance. I admire his spirit. He took the ACT for the first time in December 2013, and earned a 31 composite.
These forums have been such a boon as I prepare to send my oldest child to college (class of 2015). Best wishes to all the kiddos as they make their way to college!

Affordable Care Act Scene 2 - Insurance Premiums
We have enjoyed speculation about what ACA means to many of us over the past 75 days or so.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/1527962-affordable-care-act-ramifications-discussion.html
Now that people are hearing from their insurances, the time has come to discuss real issues and solicit advice from other members who seem to take pleasure in answering questions, such as "who do I give my new baby to when my company won't insure her (kidding) or rather where and how do I get insurance for her".
The above thread will be closed and this new thread will be used to discuss premiums, exchanges, bronze, silver, and gold plans and anything and everything about health insurances.

Establishing Residency for Tuition Purposes
I'm looking at the possibility of establishing residency to help me pay for UCSD. I'm not entirely sure how this process goes, but I have read a lot of material on it. I have a few questions regarding this.
1. How easy/difficult is it to work a job while attending school? I'm looking at jobs that involve my major (CS, if I can get in.). I know a guy who works for Sony Online Entertainment, and he's checking with his supervisor there as well as looking for other opportunities in the area for me.
2. How long does this process take? From what I can tell, it takes 2 years, but I'm not entirely sure.
3. Is it possible to live in residence halls on campus during this time, or must I have my own separate apartment?
If anyone has gone through this process, I'd really appreciate just an overview of what the process looked like for them. I'm trying to decide if this is the route I want to take, and I don't have much time to make the choice.

SDSU Student Housing Living Choices
So I've been accepted to SDSU as a pre-nursing major and I am trying to figure out the housing situation. Is it whoever fills their form out first gets priority decision? I want to fill mine out ASAP because i don't want to get stuck with sucky housing but I am unsure of what to put. Does anyone know what the discover san diego area, gender-neutral area, and toltec areas are like? I'm also considering the health professions area. Also, whats the differences between selecting one of these areas and just selecting a single, double, or triple room? I am a very outgoing person and want to find a housing area that suits me well. I called the housing office today and they said that the housing tour and admitted freshman tour don't include looking at all the various types of housing. I still might go there for the admitted freshman tour i am signed up for in early april and see if I can get any more info on the housing. Can anyone help me out?

Really need help finding a transfer school... Appreciate all help.
I'm starting to feel defeated and am really asking for anyones help..
I was a really average student in high school with a 88-89 gpa. I got a 24 act- 25 with my 2 tests combined.
I went away to a state school but really wasn't ready to go away so after orientation and a week of being away at school I returned home and just went to my local community college. This decision was the worst thing I have ever done and I regret it still to this day. This was in 2010. For a number of reasons I just wasn't doing well in school for the first two semesters.
I now have a 3.1 gpa and have been trying to transfer for a long time! It seems when I finish applications or am about to something just goes wrong!!!
I have an associates from the stupid community college I went to in New York.
Ive been trying to find a school to transfer to in the Los Angeles area but have had no luck
I was accepted to the Spring 2014 term at CSU Long Beach but then was notified in December (a month before I was suppose to attend) that my philosophy class didn't actually count to fill their requirement even though my school and professor insisted it did. So now I enrolled in a critical thinking class to fulfill it but the deadline was in November 2013... I tried to contact them since they only let me know in December 2013 I could no longer attend but they said I would have to wait until the spring semester... I CANT be out of school for ANOTHER semester. I am already a year behind because of all of this.. and now I feel like I'm taking a class that I don't need to......
I am really interested in television production and writing. However my college gpa isn't really that great and it really kills me every day! I can't believe I have been stuck in the same spot for over a year now trying to find a school to get into!
I'm open to going to other places in Southern California.. maybe Miami... and I guess last resort would be in New York. Preferably closer to NYC.
I'm just having a really hard time doing this on my own and don't really have that much help that I can get with people that I know. When I tried to get help from the Community College I graduated from they weren't too much help and told me to enroll in their program there.. which is not what I want.
I'm starting to feel defeated after trying to do this since I started going to community college.
If anyone can help I really appreciate it. :\
Thanks.

Official SIMR 2014 Thread
Hi CC,
I am an applicant for SIMR 2014.
This thread is for applicants, alumni, or others to work collaboratively to make the application process less daunting.
The website ( Program Description - Stanford Institutes of Medicine Summer Research Program (SIMR) - Stanford University School of Medicine ) states:
"The program is an eight-week program in which high school students from diverse backgrounds are invited to perform basic research with Stanford faculty, postdoctoral fellows, students and researchers on a medically-oriented project. The goals of the program include increasing interest in biological sciences and medicine in high school students, helping students to understand how scientific research is performed, and increasing diversity of students and researchers in the sciences."
Here is what MBb8T5 said on the SIMR 2013 thread:
"Admissions:
SIMR is extremely competitive: this last year they took ~60/1200 applicants, a 5% acceptance rate (lower than any undergraduate college). Most people there have good stats; a good portion have previous research experience; some are extreme overachievers.
Most SIMR students were more good-all-around students, you dont need a nobel prize to get in. However, you do need a compelling application. This is not all stats--your essays are extremely important!-- and they encourage diversity, so if your essays show you have a burning passion to do research/unusual life circumstances/compelling reason why you want to study medicine/your essays are just amazing and makes the director really like you for whatever reason, you dont need a 2400 SAT or whatever to be admitted. If youre URM/underprivileged that is a definite plus. (However, note that a large majority are not URMs or underprivileged, most are asian/indian with well educated parents, you dont have to be diverse in a traditional sense to get in. If you are stuck on the diversity essay, try writing to the prompt what makes me unique/special.)
Most SIMR participants go on to top schools (#1 destination Stanford, #2 Harvard). A few get author on papers if they are lucky and have gotten a lot done; some do very well in science fairs. Bioinformatics/computer projects tend to get results more quickly (good for science fairs), but the results you get varies widely based on your project (research involves luck), so sign up for whatever youre interested in. (If you hate programming, you dont sign up for bioinformatics).
One note about the social atmosphere: you have to take the initiative to get to know people. If you do so, it will make your summer a lot more fun! People are scattered across the med center, and there is no central meeting time/place for lunch. Some people basically go to lab, eat in lab, leave lab, rinse and repeat. However, if you attend the optional weekly social events, and you make an effort to meet other interns during lunch and get to know them, then you will make a close group of friends and have a great time. Most of the interns are pretty cool, socially competent, incredibly talented, and fun to be around (assuming you like being around smart, motivated people)-- take the time to get to know them!
Notes on demographics (these are rough & from my impression/memory):
I would guess ~15/60 were minorities in 2012; most of the rest were asian (including the subcontinental variety, which some prefer to distinguish as indian).
Gender ratio was pretty balanced.
Most interns were juniors/rising seniors (say 75%?) while only ~?25% were to-be-college-freshmen.
Most interns received $500 stipends.
Most were from the bay area (well over half, maybe >75%).
Note if you need to get housing: it is expensive! If youre 18 you can apply to live on campus which costs $2500-$3000 for the summer, off campus is similar."
The program looks amazing so I hope we all are accepted. Let's make it happen.

I feel like committing suicide because of my grades. Do I even stand a chance?
I'm a 16 year old girl and I'm currently a sophomore. My transcript is the ugliest thing I have set my eyes on apart from myself. During middle school I took two h.s courses therefore they are on my transcript. I did not have glasses and needed them badly, however could not afford them due to not having health insurance and because my mom makes a $27, 000 salary and could not take me to a specialist. This affected my grades as well as depression and not being motivated. I became motivated AFTER I got my glasses which was right in June of freshman year. Over the summer I looked up colleges, practiced for SATs, etc and realized that Stanford was my perfect school. However, middle school and freshman grades full of Bs and 1 B+ during sophomore year for fashion will thwart this from happening. GPA plays a huge role in admission and is of paramount importance therefore I feel like giving up. My unweighted cumulative average is only a 91.73. I am Hispanic and a first generation student and my single mother's income is $27,000. PLEASE tell me what I should do and what colleges I should research because my list consists of mainly reaches.

Official USC 2014 Transfer Thread
The USC transfer thread for 2013 has been awesome for me. I got a lot of advice and it was a great place to go when I felt I needed some answers or just someone else who was going through what I was going through - trying to transfer to USC.
Good news is I am going to USC in the Fall 2013! I see that people are already writing on the 2013 transfer thread about 2014 transfers so I thought I'd start a thread for all of you. I'll try to help where I can.
Good luck and fight on!!!

Does he get to choose his replacement or do they replace his show?
