Hello everyone. As the first Teach For America application is out, and due August 16th I thought I would create a 2014 Corps thread similar to the thread we had for last year. Who here is excited, and hoping to be a 2014 Corps member? What region are you hoping to teach in? Also, I am an accepted corps member through the junior application process, and would be happy to help anyone out who has any questions about the process. If we have any current TFA teachers out there/alumni that would also like to share some insight not necessarily about the process, but words of advice or stories about their experiences then that would also be appreciated.

I was wondering how many people are thinking of applying to NCSSM next year. I believe it is never to early to start thinking about the application process, and becoming acquainted with other possible applicants. If you know you are going to apply to NCSSM next year, or see it as a strong possibility I encourage you to post! You can also say what CD you are from or yours stats if you want. Past applicants can also post about the school and give tips about the app process, and NCSSM in general! Go Class of 2016! The previous thread like this is: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-admissions/1359561-ncssm-class-2015-future-applicants.html

Apply as Music Major, and then switch majors/double major?!?!?!

I know someone who auditioned for the UCLA School of Music, and was accepted as a music major. But he is majoring in both Economics AND music performance. So what's the deal with this? Can you just get accepted to the school of music, and then decide that you want to double major in economics, for example? Note: I'm a junior in HS right now and originally I was thinking about applying only as a music major. Thanks

Hello Everyone! I'm a Hispanic student currently attending SJSU. I'm just wondering who is applying as a transfer student for next Fall 2014. I'm applying as an Business Admin major. I'm also thinking on playing soccer for the school. I'm interested on trying out for their soccer team as I'm already playing club at SJSU, and feel like I could have a great chance to finally play for a NCAA team. I only have an issue with my grades. I got a D in my history class this past Fall semester. I had a family emergency towards the end of the semester which prevented me from getting a better grade in the class. However, I have gotten A's and B's on all the classes required to transfer as a Business Admin. major. Based on all the information given, what do you guys think are my chances of getting into the Argyros School of Business and Economics? My college gpa as of right now is 2.99 My HS final gpa was: 3.4 EC's 1. Jefferson Awards Club - had the chance to travel to New Orleans and build house with "Habitat for Humanity"; also traveled to "Washington DC" for the national JA competition as my school won the regional competition in 2012. 2. Club Soccer 3. Varsity Cross Country 4. Varsity Swim 5. Interact Club 6. Men's Choir 7. Summer Jobs

Life's simple pleasures

Since there are enough things in life that caUse stresses and strains, I found myself thinking today about the simple pleasures in life. Today I bought my first tree-ripened peaches. I love summer fruits and cannot wait for them to arrive on the shelves. Oftentimes the early ones are grainy and mealy. But the ones I bought today were delicious --- sweet and juicy. Also got a call from DS who just wanted to say hi. Lifes' simple pleasures. What are yours?

I plan to major in Computer Science /Computer Engineering. I got accepted by both Georgia Tech and Stony Brook (SUNY). I am preferring Stony brook because it is close to our home in NYC and also I can pay in state tuition. I am not expecting any financial aid from Georgia Tech. Am I making a mistake in choosing stony brook vs Georgia Tech? Will pay /employment opportunities be significantly different for Stony Brook vs Georgia Tech. Please advise.

I am an international student who is in a community college, who want to transfer to an university with Geological Engineering major. I want to go to a public university. I prefer universities in large cities with good transportation, because I do not have a car and I plan to not buy one until I get a job. I have found University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, but that was the only one I know. Please let me have more selection.

how accurate is the net price calculator?

My daughter has heard back from several colleges with generous merit offers and along with those offers has been told that we are not eligible for need based aid...so I assumed we would be full pay at wellesley too...but then I ran our numbers on wellesley's site and it looks like we may not be full pay. (Hoping!!!) The results showed a 24k span but the mid number is doable and the lower end wonderful&comfortable- the higher end, not so much. Wellesley is my daughter's number one choice (even with some obstacles)and im getting tense because she wants it so badly. Maybe this is a lame question, but im curious what anyone else has found the accuracy to be. This forum needs a little action anyway Thanks for any replies.

Penn vs. Williams

Hi all, I'm having a hard time deciding between Penn and Williams. I don't really care about either school's setting except for employment / internship opportunities - both campuses are nice. I'm mainly interested in math/finance/chemical engineering, of which I'll choose one depending on where I end up going. I got into Penn Engineering, but by the end of freshman year I plan to transfer into M&T or at least attempt to get a normal dual degree in Engineering/Wharton. I think that Penn offers more undergraduate experiences such as internships due to 1) name recognition and 2) being in the city. I also got into the Rachleff Scholars program, which will guarantee me research opportunities every summer, making Penn's STEM research better for me than Williams if I decide to go along that path. Williams offers an amazing education that is, to my knowledge, slightly superior in quality to Penn's with its tutorials and such; however, I've heard the difficulty is extremely high, probably a bit harder than Penn. I'm planning on majoring in math or chemistry and attempting to get a job in finance or studying math/chemical engineering in grad school. Also, along with the difficulty, I feel that since Williams is in "the middle of nowhere", it will be harder to get opportunities until after I graduate. And since I'm neither a big athlete nor a drinker, I fear that I won't fit in well. I'm visiting Penn for Quaker Days and going to Williams Previews this month. Please correct anything I said you believe to be false - these sentiments are a compilation of what i've heard, read, etc. so your advice will be greatly appreciated! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

MIT CPW 2014

So I'm going to MIT next week for CPW and I have a few questions... It seems like, from the online schedule, that there will be plenty of scheduled events with food, happening all of the time. So will I end up just getting free food for each of my meals from the different events? Will we be given any money on a campus card to try out the dining hall food? Also, will there be a lot of MIT apparel and other bling being passed out? I'd like to get some but would rather not have to buy them myself from the bookstore or something.

Is Berkeley your #1 choice?

So we have 3 more weeks until UC Berkeley decisions come out... and I am about to lose my freaking mind! I have trouble sleeping at night because I think about it SO MUCH when I lie down and stare at my ceiling. It's getting worse and worse as it's getting closer and I feel like the time can't go any faster. I know some people will tell me to chill out and it's not all that but I really gave up on so many things in life to do this and worked soooooooo hard for the past 4 years... and I just really really really want to go to Berkeley!!! Any of you out there feel the same way?

Horrible student looking for a good college.

Hi, So I did INCREASINGLY bad all throughout high school, and I'm halfway through Junior Year. Freshmen GPA:3.0 I'm not sure how this works but (83 avg) Sophomore GPA :2.1 (74 avg) Junior 1st Semester: 2.6 (78 avg) I haven't done any extracurricular activities whatsoever, I wanted to become a Musician and I thought school was a waste of time (I know; stupid me) so I didn't try. It was only 3 days ago, where I reevaluated my life, If I were to do 100 hours of community service, maintain a 4.0 GPA and get into AP. Join as many programs and Sports I can for the rest of Junior and Senior year will I get into a good college that isn't a community college? -if it helps Musical Composition and Piano is my talent -Anesthesiologist is what I would like to be. Also here's another question, as you can tell I don't write that well. I scored a 1700 on the PSAT, if I studied from now till June do you think I can reach 2.2k? All i've been doing is hitting the Blue Book (Collegeboard) and I have 2 tutors 1 hour a day, 2 hours on Saturdays. If there's anything else that I can do that will increase my chance of getting into a good college then please tell me These are the colleges I had in mind: Colgate University (It's a reach, i'm more than positive i'll be declined) Ithaca College Cornell University Hamilton College Lehigh University (If there's any more good ones I don't know about that I have a chance to be in than i'd like to know. And thanks in advance.)

Oberlin or Michigan for Clarinet?

My S has been able to narrow his choices down to Oberlin and University of Michigan for a bachelor of music in clarinet. He is having a really hard time deciding between the two. He got very good scholarships and financial aid to both, so money is less of a consideration. I've heard that of the two professors, Dan Gilbert has more "prestige" than Richard Hawkins and gets his students orchestral jobs. Is it really all about the private teacher when you are a performance major? Are there any current students of either school or people who have been in a similar situation?

University of Michigan or MSU James Madison College with Honors

I am having a difficult time deciding which school to attend, especially after I recently received my financial aid awards from both institutions. University of Michigan Route: U of M generously gave me $5,000.00 in grants, but I did not receive enough loans to match my entire cost of attendance. As a result, I applied for a Direct PLUS loan for the maximum amount of coverage, but I have yet to hear back from the university. As far as my academic aspirations, I plan to apply to the Ross School of Business through the regular decision process. If I do not gain admittance, I will attend the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and double major in Economics with a Public Policy degree. As far as a career, I will either apply to law school if I have a decent GPA and LSAT score or I will find a finance occupation before I apply for an MBA degree. James Madison College & Michigan State Honors College Route: Unfortunately, MSU did not give me any grants, but I was given loans to match my entire cost of attendance. James Madison College is a unique public policy residential college composed of 1,200 students. Basically, it's a small liberal arts college within a big university and most of their students who perform well attend top law schools in the country. Academically, I will probably double major in an International Relations degree from James Maddison with a Finance degree. I will most likely attend law school if I take this route. Additionally, I will receive the benefits from being part of the MSU Honors College as well. Thank you!

The Ivy League earnings myth

I hope this isn't a duplicate, if so it bears repeating. The number of people on here that think the world is going to end because of an ivy rejection is astounding. If you are a stellar student, many APs, 2300+ SAT, etc, chances are you will be successful wherever you attend. As an anecdote, my very good friend graduated from Cornell engineering and did that for many years, at a MAJOR electronics company. Well guess where many of the new hires came from? ITT. Please look at the articles below.."Here, however, is what was explosive: Dale and Krueger concluded that students, who were accepted into elite schools, but went to less selective institutions, earned salaries just as high as Ivy League grads. For instance, if a teenager gained entry to Harvard, but ended up attending Penn State, his or her salary prospects would be the same. In the pair's newest study, the findings are even more amazing. Applicants, who shared similar high SAT scores with Ivy League applicants could have been rejected from the elite schools that they applied to and yet they still enjoyed similar average salaries as the graduates from elite schools. In the study, the better predictor of earnings was the average SAT scores of the most selective school a teenager applied to and not the typical scores of the institution the student attended." http://www.brookings.edu/research/articles/2004/10/education-easterbrook http://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/the-college-solution/2011/03/01/the-ivy-league-earnings-myth
