I know you've probably seen hundreds of threads like this especially around this time of year. But I can't help it, I REALLY do need help on what to take since I haven't gotten a lot of helpful suggestions from people from my school, even from my counselor. So here's the run down:
I'll be a junior next year. Taking bio, reg physics, algebra 3-4 right now.
My options for next year:
1. AP Lang
APUSH
PreCalc
AP French
chem
AP Bio
2.AP Lang
APUSH
PreCalc
AP French
Chem
AP CompSci
3. AP Lang
APUSH
AP French
PreCalc
AP Bio
AP CompSci
I was gonna do AP Physics, but since the class will be split into 2 years, the teacher says that since I'm going well in reg physics, I can jump right into AP Physics 2. But the problem is, my school won't offer the class until I'm a senior, and when that time comes, I'll jump right into AP Physics 2. And he said that another problem is the class will only happen if theres enough interest, so if the class will not be offered by then, then I'll just take AP Physics my senior year nonetheless. I'll just skip physics all together junior year, so the schedules above are that I've came up with.
Thoughts?

New to ACT
Alrite guys, I plan on taking the ACT in June and I'm a junior.
I know nothing about the test except the fact that there is a reading section, a science section, a math section, and a writing section.
I have been studying the SAT for the past year so I have no knowledge of the ACT. Is there something like the BB for the ACT? Where can I take practice tests? What books should I get to study? How should I study?
Thanks for the help. All help is appreciated.

Ask questions about NYU!
Hi all!
I am a current NYU student (specifically in the LS program, but I have friends from all the schools). I know that admissions offers are being made right about now, and that it can be a time where lots of students have many questions. Last year when I was choosing between the schools I got into, someone from NYU started a thread like this and they were pretty helpful so I thought I'd try to do the same. Feel free to post here or send me a private message if you have any questions about life at NYU!
(though please no "chances" questions, I honestly have no idea and you'll all find out soon anyway!)

A parent's cautionary tale – SWF- Northeast need not apply?
I would like to start out by saying this is not a rant just one parent's observation as I've participated in this process over the past 3+ years; I would like to thank the many members who have provided their effort, time and expertise in transmitting the information that has been so valuable to me and I am sure others on the site. I would like to be as transparent as possible so that others may benefit from this Odyssey that was just undertaken – –
There are many reasons why parents and their children play the game of high stakes college admission but I think it gets crystallized down into the scene that we will probably remember from "Jerry Maguire" where Renée Zellweger says as the curtain closes to the first class compartment of the airplane to her son "first class used to mean a better meal and a more comfortable seat-- now it means a ticket to a better life" there is some truth to that statement as far as I see it in terms of this process that many of us have entered.
As Northstarmom might have pointed out my daughter was competitive in most every way except one – she was not an athlete in any way. In every other respect, she was "beyond the 75th percentile"; perfect score on the ACT; NMF; 800/800/750 on 3 SAT II's. She took 90% of the APs offered at her school and got fives on all of them. Her unweighted average was 98.5 out of 100. She was the editor of the literary magazine for the school which has won awards across the state, and she was the technical director for the theater company for 4 years- proficient at mechanical props and such.. She started her own business and website and makes $$; and most importantly (as seems to be the rage today) showed a "deep EC" over 10 years with the culmination in a GS gold award project with 3 regional speakers, 2 national speakers on safety issues for girls regarding pertinent topics of the day including sexual assault, financial literacy and the like. She has also held other leadership positions across her state for STEM programs, and currently has a nomination for the US presidential scholarship for her state.
As you can see, It appears as if she has almost all the things that "they"prize/request/advise.
Unfortunately, she is a middle-class/barely upper-middle-class white female from a high tax state/NE with parents or family who are not legacies of any of the schools she applied to; her ancestors come from Northern Europe; and she is not interested in sports competition.
Her results were typical of what many will report today-- denied at H, Y, Brown, MIT. Waitlisted at Bowdoin, Williams, Davidson. You might be wondering if she neglected the other things that we all talk about on the site. She did not. She visited each and every small school/LAC and interviewed at each one (other than Williams which has no interviews). She wrote personal thank you notes to each interviewer; she wrote personalized essays that mentioned professors by name for the classes that she shall sat in on while attending. She weaved and the such that (at least in this parents opinion) would likely make any Adcom smile in a gesture of knowing. In other words it was not generic, it was not canned; it was authentic.
Everyone has read the platitudes 1000 times "it's a crapshoot"its holistic/they can do what they want (and boy they sure do)- but this does not answer the why of the process for some.
I'm struck by what I read on a recent thread concerning the boy that was lamenting his friend's inability to get into one of 4 Ivy League schools that he had chosen based upon his stats, etc- and the multitude of pages that ensued all of which were enlightening- the most enlightening for me was the post by Lucilake who provided the concept of "institutional engineering".
As I mentioned at the outset this was our family's foray into the high-stakes game of college admissions – I have one special needs child was already in college doing well and I have one behind this child who is decidedly average in most every way!!!. Again, I am so grateful for the information provided on this site- it was interesting throwing our family's hat in the ring for this process.
PS before anyone takes us/me to task she has applied and has an acceptance to a financial safety a full ride to a NMF school.

What should be the maximum acceptable debt for a undergraduate engineering degree?
I am a prospective transfer student who finished all the Gen. Ed. and 2 year science courses (math, chemistry, physics, etc.) so I would only have 2, realistically 3 years to go until I get my undergraduate degree. I have applied to USCs petroleum engineering program and have to evaluate the total cost of school versus the potential earnings I will make after graduation. Is it true that the engineering students receive more aid and merit scholarships than those in the non-science degrees? Has there ever been cases where students who attended USC left with less debt than say someone who graduated from a UC? Any advice or comments would be appreciated.

Columbia/ Princeton (I know another one, but this one is different I promise!)
Hey so I'm a senior, will be grauduating in about two months and will have to make a decision about college in less than one. The thought of making that decision really stresses me out. Initially Columbia was my first choice. I applied to Princeton to increase my chances of getting into at least one Ivy League. I also applied to Harvard and Yale. Well I got waitlisted at Harvard, didn't get into Yale, but got into both Columbia and Princeton. Yay! So you think my choice would be easier right? Afterall Columbia was my first choice. Wrong. I'v never been so confused before in my life. I'm really attracted to the idea of going to one of the "big three." Who wouldn't right? I'v visited Princeton and the campus is gorgeous. They really focus on the Undergrads AND I got a great financial aid packet. Nevertheless, frankly their Grade Deflation policy scares me (I went to a really competitve high school and I am not sure I want to spend another four years in that sink or swim environment--since everyone is essentially going to be competing for a limited number of As). Don't get me wrong, I know any ivy is going to be competitive but it says a lot about the school when their policy is directly geared towards facilitating that combative, stressful atmposphere instead of one of camraderie etc. Also Princeton students have the LOWEST gpa of all the ivy leagues because of this policy. To make matters worse, they have this reputation for being--well Snooty. YUCK.
Now Here are the things I like about Columbia: New York City, seems to be more diverse than Princeton as a whole, Their core program seems really cool, Campus: not as pretty as Columbia but still really pretty. Also a current student called me from the school like last week at 9:00 just to welcome me and Chat about the school, my expectations, and to see if I had any questions he could answer for me about Columbia. I found this really thoughtful and it just reaffirmed my idea of Columbia as an embracive and accomodating place. I didn't get as good of a financial aid packet as I got in Princeton though..so theres that (Its about a 2000 dollar difference).
So anyway I'm Stuck. I could use feedback, guidance..someone to choose for me. ANYTHING WIll Help.
PS. I will also be visiting both schools nex week for Preview programs so that should be helpful too!
