My son applied as a transfer, and I was wondering how long a decision would take, or has in the past?

Commuting or 12,000 of debt a year

I was admitted to a university that is within 10 minutes of my house. I originally applied as a resident to see what the price would be to live on campus and when I switched to commuter my price dropped by about $12,000. After making this switch people criticized me saying that I would not be getting the most out of college if I commuted and that I would have no social life. They told me that I would be worth taking on the extra debt just to get these things. Would commuting really have this drastic of an effect on my social life and experience?

UChicago vs Williams

Hello everyone. Thank you for looking and helping me. I am having trouble deciding between the two and can't seem to decide. My career aspirations are in finance (banking). However, I know my preferences can change. I know they are totally different schools, and each of them are on the opposite side of the spectrum location wise. I don't have a preference for a small liberal arts school vs a large research institution. I have already went to Chicago's accepted students day, and it was very good. I will be attending the accepted students day at Williams as well. I am not a hardcore academic. However, based upon my own observations, not everyone at UChicago is either. Nevertheless, I do have a lot of respect for people who pursue academia in general. Besides quite a bit of weightlifting, I do not play sports. I would enjoy attending and watching sporting events. As far as future employers in the finance industry, which would they prefer to see I attended? Which has better connections? Will Williams be seen as less "prestigious", as superficial as that sounds? I know this year, UChicago had an 8% acceptance rate and Williams had roughly 17%. Does that have any significant meaning? I am very fortunate to be int this position and will appreciate any input one has to offer. Also, any other comments about the environment and types of people at these schools would be great!

Opinions about Top Tier Schools?

I'm curious to see how other highschoolers feel about the idea of applying to top tier schools in the future. I have friends who range from wanting to go to the university five minutes from their house to friends that want to apply to Harvard, and that has nothing to do with their capabilities. I mean, a lot of us still have years to think about it, but it's cool to stop and think about where we envision ourselves going to school. I personally think that it would be in my best interest to consider all of the possibilities and apply according to my interests. If that's at a top tier school, that's great, but just as well to me if it's at UCF or UF. I'll still probably apply to UChicago, Stanford, and Harvard. I don't like the opinion that the only schools worth going to are the ones that have a 5% acceptance rate though, haha.

Choosing a Hall for 2014-2015 » HELP

Hey everyone, I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on forming at the UW. I was looking at Hansee hall and getting a single there, but I've heard since it's the "24-hour quiet hall" it might not be best for a freshman. I mostly wanted Hansee because I want a single and Hansee singles are cheap. Are Mercer Court/Stevens Court good for freshmen students? I loved the fact that their apartment style and you can still have a single, essentially still having "roommates" just not sharing a room. Do freshmen ever get into these or are they usually just filled with upperclassmen? I think all the west campus dorms looked nice. I got to tour them and loved them all, but the new ones on west campus are really all doubles, correct? Although I know Lander has a number of singles. My last thing was this (and really what I'm most curious about): do you guys recommend a single to a freshmen? What was your experience in dorming in a double or single? Is a double really necessary in your first year? I'd think it wouldn't be all that challenging to meet people in college while dorming alone. The main reason I don't think I want a double is both my sisters had triples and had horrible experiences, which shocked me since they both seem to make friends easily. Idk. Any help?

financial aid and getting remarried

At most of the CSS schools, you are required to submit the income from both parents even if divorced. If the custodial parent remarries, are you still required to submit the income of the other divorced parent or just the new spouse?

What types of colleges should I be looking at/applying to?

My county regards Spanish and World Geography(classes I took in middle school) as high school classes, and I got a B in Spanish 1, C in Spanish 2, and C in World Geography. That gave me a 2.3 GPA coming into high school. My freshmen year was a bit rough as well, I took one AP class (World History), got a C in it, and my overall GPA for freshmen year was a 2.66. My sophomore year I took AP Biology and got a B+ in the class, my overall GPA was a 3.58 for that year. I am currently a junior and I'm taking 3 AP classes (U.S. History, English Lang & Comp, Spanish 5) My first semester plus third quarter average is an 89 in History, 94 in English, and 91 in Spanish. I have an A average in all my other classes except Algebra 2. That gives me a 4.1-4.2 GPA for my junior year if I maintain those grades. Unfortunately, that only brings up my overall weighted GPA to a 3.33-3.37. I haven't taken the SAT/ACT yet. But I'm signed up to take the US History subject test on May 3rd. I received something in the 150s on my PSAT, 51-53 in Writing, 62-64 in CR, and 38 in Math(it's my absolute weakest subject, and the only thing keeping me away from a higher score). I took a practice ACT and received a 27 on reading, 24 on writing, 25 on science, and I have yet to take the math part but out of the 16 questions I've done I've gotten 15 right. My ACT practice score (minus math) is a 25 so far. I believe that after practice and possibly a math tutor I can get my SAT score to 1700+ and my ACT to 27+. Because of my upward trend and my okay SAT scores (hopefully), what types of colleges should I be looking at? Should I be looking at colleges that accept in my GPA range or some a bit higher? I'm also a minority, I heard that helps too? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Should I bother applying?

I was wondering if I should bother applying/have even a chance, to ivy caliber schools (such as UPENN - Wharton) with only a 3.8 GPA (but top 10% & most of the lower grades in math) along with a 800 Math II score, and 2250 + SAT). Would the low math grades in rigorous classes kill my chances?

So, I just chose Cornell over another top school, and I just had a few questions. 1) Since I'll be taking demanding courses, what are some easy classes so that my gpa isn't totally wrecked (or some hard classes to stay away from)? 2) How long do you have to drop classes into the semester, after signing up? 3) How easy is it to get tickets to the hockey games if you don't get the season tickets? 4) What are the best frats to join? (not the sober frat or math frat) 5) Best places to study if you want total quietness? 6) Best way to make friends/ best club to join? Any other tips/ recommendations? Proud to be a Cornellian

The Official Fall 2014 UCLA Transfer Decisions Thread

Decisions are slated to be released next month in "late April." Although UCLA hasn't committed to an exact date as far as anyone here knows, they have historically released their decision date for transfers about a month after they've released freshman decisions, which was March 21st this year. Historically, they've also released their decisions a couple days or so before UC Berkeley(April 25th, this year), so this means UCLA will probably release transfer decisions around April 20th-23rd. Who else just wants the end of April to come already? I sure do. Good luck to everyone!

Um.... does anyone care to talk to me about hysterectomies, surgical menopause, etc?

I know this is maybe a weird/uncomfortable topic to bring up. Sorry I would really love to hear from anyone who has experience with any of this. I feel very overwhelmed and alone in this decision. My H is supportive but her really can't understand it since he's not a woman. he just wants to fix it I've just been advised to have my uterus (and possibly ovaries) removed. I'm having a really hard time deciding what to do. The reason for the recommendation is very large uterine fibroids. These cause very heavy/painful periods and may be contributing to some frequent urination problems as well. My doc said I could try the UAE procedure, but the fibroids are so large that she isn't confident it would help and might just be back again in a year for the hysterectomy anyway. So they recommend removal of the uterus altogether. She also suggested I may want to have my ovaries removed at the same time. I am a breast cancer survivor; I was dx at age 34 with triple-negative BC (so, non-hormone related...) However we are waiting for a new genetic test this summer because someone suggested I may fit the profile for some new cancer "syndromes" (though I am BRCA negative.) if I tested positive for those, it would mean my risk for more BC or other types of cancer, possibly including ovarian, would be increased. Right now, my risk for anything ovary/hormone related is just a bit over general population. I think general is like 6% and I'm like 10%. So everyone's like, "hey while we're in there why not take out the ovaries to eliminate the slight possibility of a hormone related second BC, or ovarian cancer." I am 47. My mom went through menopause at about 52/53. I believe I've been in peri-menopause for about 13 years, since my chemotherapy which caused a temporary menopause. I already get night sweats, have trouble sleeping, am very fatigued, prone to feeling depressed, have some incontinence issues starting, have some memory issues starting, etc. I've been reading about surgical menopause after ophorectomy/hysterectomy, and am terrified by what I've read. It sounds so sudden, drastic, and horrible. I read some awful statistics about how surgical menopause causes a statistically shorter lifespan (heart disease, osteoporosis, etc.) and how there's a 2-fold increase in cognitive decline and dementia later in life!!!!! Plus that many women suffer INCREASED incontinence problems. (And due to my BC history we don't feel comfortable with hormone-replacement therapy...) My recently-deceased grandmother had very bad osteoporosis and very scary dementia. So these issues are quite important and firghtening. And the quality-of-life stuff (incontinence, memory, insomnia, depression) don't sound like much fun either. So I'm thinking, why on earth am I considering putting myself through this, when the fibroids are not a life-threatening problem??? Basically it's a quality-of-life thing... and I've been living with the bad periods and frequent urination already (which could just be peri-menopause anyway, right?) So why would I trade that set of KNOWN quality-of-life issues for an unknown, and possibly MUCH worse, set of probable consequences? Not to mention having to go through a fairly serious surgery with a 6+-week recovery period where I won't be able to live my normal life.... I asked the drs specifically if I could consider doing nothing, and they said, "We don't recommend it." There IS another consideration which is that my mom had uterine cancer at age 62-ish. Right now I am leaning towards having just the uterus removed but not the ovaries, and letting myself have a more natural menopause. I'm somewhat surprised at myself for this, because I've always been one to take on the most drastic anti-cancer treatments suggested. but in this case I just don't know if the small possible benefit justifies the quality-of-life reduction it seems likely I'd experience! Thanks. Sorry if this is weird. Stacey

Does taking MIT OpenCourseWare courses look good on an application?

$

This MIT Admissions page recommends MIT OpenCourseWare as a great way to enrich oneself as a high school student. But does this look good on an MIT application? I love learning and I'd gladly delve into physics courses over the summer, but if there's no way to convey my efforts to the MIT admissions board, I'd rather spend my time doing something else more worthwhile. So does MIT care at all if high school students have taken their free online courses, or is it a non-issue? And please cite where you get your information from rather than simply speculating. And what other extracurriculars can I engage in within 2014 that would look good to MIT when I apply at the end of this year?
