Am I screwed with these two Fs

$

I'm currently a first year freshman at a junior college. Last semester I received an F in a non transferable math course, it's a developmental math class. This semester I'm going to receive another F which is going to bring my GPA down to below a 2.0 almost. I screwed up pretty bad. I am not going to have 63 credits by next may (graduation). I'll only have about 53 (if everything goes as planned). I was thinking about not graduating from here, and applying to schools for fall 2015 anyway. I feel like if you're gonna graduate on time then graduate but if you're not going to graduate on time then just transfer. I DEFINITELY plan on getting my bachelor's degree so an associate's doesn't mean much. But since I will not have the guaranteed acceptance into schools because I'm not gonna graduate, will these two Fs hold me back from transferring into a good 4 year? How can I bring my GPA up? I'm looking at VCU primarily. My other choices are: ODU and a couple of out of state schools. Since my GPA is going to be a bit sub-par, I'm going to have extracurricular activities (clubs, charity work, etc) and recommendations.

Hi there! Since I haven't found any SSP threads for 2014, I thought I would start one myself. So I made a list for possible discussions... -Admission Tips -Admission Tips (for international students & sophomores) -Your stats (GPA, standardized tests, etc.) for ssp 2014 -Where ssp students are coming from -Words of encouragement from former ssp student -What is the one most beneficial thing you gained from ssp? (to ssp alum) Feel free to add any other discussions you think would be relevant!

High School Honors Science Program at Michigan State ( HSHSP )

Hey, Just wanted to tell people about the awesomeness that is the High School Honors Science Program at Michigan State. It's a 7 week research program--you're paired with a lab mentor in a bunch of different areas (plant and soil sciences, biochem, genetics, physics, basically everything there is on campus...). At the end of the 7 weeks, you write a research paper and do a presentation on what you've found to the 27 or so other people that attended the program, as well as the people in their lab. But enough about the logistics... It was, without a doubt, the best summer I've had. You'll spend countless hours in lab, you'll be upset when all your cells you'd been working on for days die, you'll be overjoyed when your PCR works after countless tries, you might even do some research worthy of intel (4 semifinalists) or siemens (7 semifinalists). I found out that research was really something that people did for a living, and something I wanted to pursue. But the most significant part of the whole experience was in my opinion the people you spend 7 weeks of your life with. This is an amazing group of engaging, quirky, way-too-sciencey people who will amaze you, make you laugh, and make you think. I'm not sure how Dr. Richmond does it, but she'll manage to pick out a group of people with whom you can spend 7 weeks with, but it'll seem like 7 days. I am sure there are a ton of people who apply just because they want to be able to put down that they did research over the summer. Trust me, if that is why you are applying, you will not really get much out of the program. In my opinion (and I'm sure there were probably people who disagreed with me) HSHSP was about being able to meet other individuals who were just as excited about finding things out as you are, not just in the lab, but outside of the lab as well. Keeping that in mind, HSHSPers as a whole seem to have done pretty well in the first round of college admissions--4 MIT, 1 yale, 1 stanford, 1 caltech, 1 brown, 2 cornell, and we've still got regular decisions to go. But then again, corrolation v. causality... So. If pulling all nighters cubing and talking about prufrock sounds at all appealing, hshsp@msu.edu . Hopefully some other HSHSPers will post and tell a bit more about their take on things...

I was wondering how many people are thinking of applying to NCSSM next year. I believe it is never to early to start thinking about the application process, and becoming acquainted with other possible applicants. If you know you are going to apply to NCSSM next year, or see it as a strong possibility I encourage you to post! You can also say what CD you are from or yours stats if you want. Past applicants can also post about the school and give tips about the app process, and NCSSM in general! Go Class of 2016! Boston University vs. UMass Honors

If money was not an issue, I would probably be going to BU. However, $60,000 compared to under $20,000 creates an obvious problem. If I went to BU, I would do Bio-medical Engineering which is what I truly want to do. In UMass, I'd be doing pre-med. Ultimately, I want to be a doctor and plan on going to medical school so i'd rather go to the school that gives me the greatest chance of getting into a really good medical school. I am not much of a partier so that part of UMass does not appeal to me. Anyway thanks in advance.

Best possible solutions to student loan crisis

Student loans are becoming just as big a crisis as the housing bubble that has been discussed here before. I know possible solutions have been discussed here a lot but I was wondering if any of these s o lutions have been considered good possibilities. The following are solutions that I have heard before being brought up and/or have been wondering about and was wondering which of the following you think would be good solutions. , if you think any of these 7 would be workable. 1. Privatize student loans entirely 2. Cap the amount students can borrow from the Feds at a very strict limit, i.e. no more than 30,000 total for any undergraduate degree 3. Force colleges to pay a part of any debt that their graduates default on 4. Allow them to be discharged to bankruptcy 5. Require that all employers be informed of prospective employees who have had student loans defaulted on or "forgiven" 6. Some combination of the above policies 7. Eliminate student loans entirely, public and private Do you support any of the above options for student loans or do you support a different option?

Are guidance counselors even needed?

This post isn't aiming to insult any guidance counselors or people with similar jobs. Rather I want to see what kind of counselors people have and what they think about them. I'll start off. Honestly and objectively, my guidance counselor knows almost nothing about college admission. She only talks about getting good SAT scores and believes that visiting a college will get someone into the school when it clearly says on the college's website that they don't track visits. She loses paperwork from students (bunch of my friends experienced), doesn't listen to students' suggestions, and most importantly, thinks she knows the best. And, as students, we can't say anything back to her since she can play a negative role in our admission if we get her angry. We just gotta agree with her on everything because she "knows college." I assume this isn't uncommon at all. My question is, though, are counselors really needed? They don't contribute that much to our college success and they write GOOD recommendation letters for EVERYONE (making the value of recommendation letter significantly pathetic). What is the purpose and advantage of guidance counselors?

The USC transfer thread for 2013 has been awesome for me. I got a lot of advice and it was a great place to go when I felt I needed some answers or just someone else who was going through what I was going through - trying to transfer to USC. Good news is I am going to USC in the Fall 2013! I see that people are already writing on the 2013 transfer thread about 2014 transfers so I thought I'd start a thread for all of you. I'll try to help where I can. Good luck and fight on!!!

Freshman - Meal plan or no meal plan?

$

To anybody who knows something about this topic, would you recommend that a freshman at MIT get a meal plan or not? Right now, I cook for myself on a daily basis, but I'm worried that cooking could become too time-consuming in a busy college life setting. A lot of the dorms I'm considering also require that freshmen get hefty meal plans, so... I'm very confused as to how I should navigate this situation. Other facts to consider are that I don't mind cafeteria food, am very health-conscious about what I eat, and eat a relatively small diet compared to others (probably because I'm not very active lol). Any advice/suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated!

2014 Fall UCSD Transfer Decisions Thread

UCSD transfer decisions are released starting mid-March through the end of April. I've been dropping by CC to see if any new threads were posted related to UCSD decisions, but there were none and I got impatient to wait. Format is pretty much a replica of last year's thread with the exception of all the BB coding (the last time I even ventured near coding was in the days of MySpace =__=;; enough BB coding with just moving over the FAQ from the previous thread to here!) - personally I think jdom24 organized the 'questionnaire' and starting post quite nicely I touched it up a bit though since it's a bit long and added some things I thought people might be curious about, but you can always check out last year's thread questionnaire if you want to share more! As for the information he added regarding the transfer though, I just carried it over since it's all useful! Anyways, in previous years, decisions were released in batches. Here's to hoping to be in an early batch! Good luck everyone! Choose one Decision! Decision: Accepted Decision: Waitlisted Decision: Rejected UC GPA: Major Pre-reqs Completed (Y/N): Intended Major: TAG?: IGETC?: Extracurriculars (clubs, leadership, volunteer, work): Additional Details: Applied for Financial Aid?: State (if domestic applicant): Country (if international applicant): Ethnicity: Gender: Estimated Family Contribution(EFC)/Income Bracket: Attending Transfer Admit Day? (if admitted): Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected (strengths/weaknesses): Anddddddd some answers to Frequently Asked Questions - hopefully with this, there will be less straying off tangent on this thread until all decisions are out ^^ (after which, we can all go oompa loompa on this thread) (MAKE SURE TO INDICATE WHETHER OR NOT YOU ARE GOING TO UCSD)

CPP VS SJSU VS SFSU

I have been admitted to all three universities for civil engineering and I know sjsu and cal poly have the better programs. Which one should I go to. I live close to cal poly pomona (1hr) but I'll be living on campus. I want to have fun and "get the full college experience." From what I've read cp is the best for CE with sjsu next but very close. And living in SF would be awesome but does not have a well known program.

Most useful non-engineering classes for engineers?

I have a few electives that I would like to use to learn some useful skills. I was wondering what are courses that are typically not built into the engineering curriculum, but that would be very beneficial to one aspiring to be an engineer, more specifically a civil engineer? This can be any sort of upper level math class, computer, humanities, communications, or any class like that, Thanks.

I am a senior and am getting ready to make my college choice- the typical CC kid trying to decide between a state school (Indiana) and a "top 20" university (Notre Dame). I got my financial aid information back from ND today and am struggling weighing my options. IU- cost of attendance 24,000- 6k per year scholarship- 18k times 4 years- so total around 72,000, no loans. My parents say they could easily pay for this out of their current incomes. (I think my parents earn about 120-130 thousand dollars a year. We have no mortgage, car payments, credit card debt, etc, ) Notre Dame- much more confusing financial info. University Scholarship- 12,300 Campus job- 2,700 Federal Perkins Loan- 4,000 Federal Direct subsidized loan- 450 Federal direct unsub loan- 3,050 Total assistance- $22,500 Cost of attendance 62,000 Cost per year- 39,500 times four years = 158,000 (shudder) So this is way more than IU and it has loans. I honestly thought that this may have been a little higher I have about 30,000 in the bank for college from a few very generous relatives. I know my parents do not have a large college savings account for me- I think they have been more focused on building up their savings and making sure we never had any debt. My mom thinks Notre Dame could be doable, if I work during the summer/take on a few more loans/my parents dip into savings a little. My dad is not as optimistic. I am worried though, because I have a little brother who still needs to go to college in five years, and my mom has recently been diagnosed with a bowel disease which may lead to some medical bills down the road. I do not want my family to have to eat ramen noodles for four years so I can go to a fancy college. I love Notre Dame- I love its medium size, amazing programs/faculty/facilities, beautiful campus, residence hall system, religious influence, school spirit... but I realize I could also be successful at IU. I am thinking of going to medical school but I am not sure, so that also will need money and influences my decision. I applied to some other schools (Case Western, Loyola Chicago, Miami of Ohio) and they all gave me decent academic scholarships, but I would still be paying around 30-35k, and if I am going to pay that much, I would rather go to Notre Dame. I guess I just feel like my parents want to make me happy and may let me go to ND even if it is not the smartest decision for all of us. But again, my parents have always been smart with their money so I feel like I should trust them. What do you all, as parents, think? Is this a decent financial aid package? How many loans are too many? I just really would appreciate some guidance. All of my friends know where they are going to college and I feel like I am just now beginning to make my choice. I know where I want to go and I feel like I have worked really hard but maybe it just isn't doable.

Real life smarts

So about an hour ago, I tried to bake brownies. It took me about 35 minutes to find the package, mix everything, and set it in the oven. It's currently baking (and probably burning) right now. The package advertises "prepare in 5 minutes!". Does anyone else feel like they lack real life smarts - skills that you actually need in real life? Cooking is a prime (pun unintended) example.

Which dorms at Tech are the best? I don't know much about the dorms at GT, but ideally I would like to have a room close to freshman classes in a nicer building with a good (but not too rowdy) social scene. Any ideas? Thanks.
